Coaching

ASAPconnect, in partnership with technical assistance (TA) providers across California, aims to enhance the quality of TA for after school programs. TA has been defined as ongoing, needs-driven support services to create effective and quality before and after school programs. Effective TA delivery starts with TA providers possessing the Foundational Competencies.  In addition to the Foundational Competencies, TA providers may utilize a range of TA strategies to impact the quality of after school programs. ASAPconnect has defined and outlined core competencies for five strategies including training, mentoring, coaching, consulting and providing and brokering resources.

The following competencies serve as a guideline for professional growth and development for TA providers who “Provide Coaching” in the field.

Definition of Coaching: Working in collaboration with an individual or small group to develop specific skills that improve work performance

Core Competencies

  1. Assessing on-going improvement

    1. Creates tools to support individual/program assessment or development.
    2. Partners with program to create a work or action plan to promote ongoing improvement.
  2. Effective communication

    1. Provides honest and non-judgmental feedback to programs.
    2. Demonstrates ability to establish realistic and consistent expectations for the coaching relationship.
  3. Skill Development

    1. Partners with individual or program to build skills or create replicable processes that are institutionalized or embedded in the program.
    2. Uses knowledge and skills to model/teach skill as identified to meet need of client.
    3. Encourages client to practice and integrate new ski9ll into daily work.
    4. Demonstrates effective management of time, documentation/record-keeping skills and report writing.
    5. Demonstrates flexibility in providing a variety of strategies and techniques in skill development to address different learning styles and preferences.
  4. Asset-Based Collaboration

    1. Partners with program to assess program strengths and challenges.
    2. Partners with program to identify and address barriers to achieving goals.
    3. Approaches the coach-client relationship with mutual respect and positive relationship-building skills.
    4. Includes client in applying problem solving strategies when necessary.
  5. Commitment to Quality

    1. Shares knowledge of professional development opportunities, resources, and referral services available to client.
    2. Displays a commitment to quality through continued personal growth.
